The Social Development Research Center & the College of Liberal Arts - De La Salle University cordially invite you to a Public Lecture on Human Capital – Perspectives & Implications by Dr. John C. Groth (SDRC Distinguished Visiting Professor Emeritus Finance Professor, The Mays School Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas 77843) | March 27, 2014, Thursday Tereso Lara Seminar Room, LS230 | 2:30-4:30 PM Human Capital (HC) is the common factor of importance in all countries, regions, and the world. HC offers opportunities, hopes, and benefits. The impact – sometimes quantum in nature – of HC output has been enormous in the past, affecting survival, life expectancy, quality of life, and a host of other factors. The impact of HC on life will be monumental in the future. Background. Human capital is a resource that has special characteristics and has profound implications on individuals, organizations, economies and nations. Relationships between human capital and the economy drive developments, returns on human capital, and the standard of living enjoyed (or endured) by all. Furthermore, variations in demographics across economies and regions will result in differential effects on returns on human capital. Overview. The lecture will explore core issues in HC including its brief history, monumental developments and its impact on life. The emergence of expectations, the role of expectations in behavior and the crucial importance of expectations and leadership will be examined. As such the lecture will address the following issues: · The nature of investments in and returns on human capital. · The notion of HC residuals and the crucial role residuals have in sustaining and developing an economy. · Physical capital vs. Mind capital and important relationships and implications. · The most important characteristic of HC – overlooked by many individuals and organizations. · The argument that “cheap labor” does not exist. · The impact of education on the returns and “life” of human capital. · “Sustainability” of HC – and what is essential to provide for the sustaining of human capital. · The effects of leadership and, separately, management on opportunities for and returns from human capital. · The impact of creativity, innovation, and the leveraging of human capital. · The “power of idea,” the notion of relevance, and converting ideas into reality. · The effects of science and technology on the opportunities and returns on human capital. · The important role of psychology and other social sciences in preserving and nurturing human capital. · Unusual perspectives on HC which are important to educators, managers, industry and government leaders. The lecture will explore ideas rather than achieve a consensus of thought. The presentation and discussion will provoke thoughts, develop perspectives, and will prompt debate – much the intent of a university. The presentation/discussion is inter/multi-disciplinary – and will benefit from an audience having diverse backgrounds, experiences, cultures, and perspectives. Bionote: Dr. Groth received his Ph.D. from the Krannert School, Purdue University. He also holds degrees in physics and in industrial administration. He has authored numerous publications and has been cited as a major contributor to the literature. Current research interests include: the value creating cycle; risk-resolution, time, and capital commitment; special issues in valuation such as the exclusive value principle and critical factor amplification effects; conceptual issues related to pricing; paths to discovery; opportunity assessment techniques; stimulating and focusing creativity; innovation; trend analysis and implications for businesses; and the integration of behavioral factors in pricing.
