The Solanco Fair is by far the largest single event in Southern - TopicsExpress

The Solanco Fair is by far the largest single event in Southern Lancaster County, and largest event of the three-day fair is the annual fair parade on Wednesday evening. During the parade, it is estimated that there may be as many as 10,000 people in Quarryville. This many people combined with the parade makes for a traffic nightmare. Every year, the QFD Fire Police, along with neighboring mutual aid FPs keep this nightmare from becoming a reality. A little known fact is how many hours our Fire Police Captain Carl Diem and Fire Police Lt. Ron Weaver spend on the planning and implementation of the traffic control plan. These men begin planning with the Quarryville Police Chief and police officers by the middle of August, and continue up until parade hour. They spent countless hours pouring over details and making sure everyone will have a safe and expedient time in and around town. The night of the parade, they set up detours, deploy fire police and monitor traffic conditions. The fire police will help people around the detours and try to make it as simple as possible. Of course, it is not always easy, and some people give them a hard time, but remember, these Fire Police are volunteers and are doing the job the best they can. Thanks to Carl, Ronnie and the rest of the dedicated QFD Fire Police crew. You may never get a lot of accolades, and even get some hard times from people trying to get around a scene, but we truly appreciate what you do at incident scenes and around the community.
