But that does not mean the BJP is doing any better. The Narendra Modi phenomenon has been created by the US Republican branch of the Overseas Friends of the BJP, the idea of one presidential leader traipsing around the country giving speeches in different idioms to show how national and unifying he truly must be... Modis speeches are getting worse rather than better, Hyderabad was not bad, Delhi, Jaipur, Kanpur etc pretty hopeless... I have said what he needs to do is demonstrate some real leadership over his own party and appoint a Shadow Cabinet: what stops him from saying these are my Shadow Ministers of Finance, Home, Defence, Foreign Affairs? If he cannot lead his own party, he cannot hope to project himself as a credible national force. I have also said that on the other side, Rahul Gandhi needs to go back to becoming Hamlet and hearing his late fathers ghost again and get on with a Putsch that puts both Sonia and Manmohan out to grass, and to enter the contest with a new and competent team, distancing himself from the Sonia-Manmohan mistakes rather than being burdened with them around his neck as Sonia-Manmohan would like him (smooth transition of power) to be to preserve their (fake) legacy. The chances of either Modi or Rahul Gandhi showing anything like real political leadership except accidentally and sporadically seem thin, so we are likely to be ruled in 2014 by the one grown-up around, who is Pranab Mukherjee. Neither of my two political friends, Rajiv Gandhi and SS Ray, were fond of Pranab Babu or perhaps he of them, but I have said that, to his credit, he is both nationalist and secular, and he remains intelligent and politically experienced and alive to new ideas and quite a quick learner....
