The South Australian Senate count has been finalised, confirming that Labor won only one seat. Let us spare a thought for Senator Don Farrell, who voluntarily gave up top spot on the ALP Senate ticket, a spot he had won in a democratic party ballot, because of a noisy campaign by the Left demanding that Penny Wong be given top spot even though she didn’t win the ballot. As a result he has lost his seat. I don’t agree with Don Farrell about quite a lot of things, but he deserves credit for putting party unity ahead of his personal interests and paying the price for doing so.
