The South Korean government said for the first time that it is seeking to reduce its total defense contribution in negotiations with the US for the next defense cost-sharing agreement between the two countries, which will take effect in 2014. The decision comes amid claims that South Korea’s contribution to the cost of hosting the US military is currently excessive and that the US forces in Korea have not used 1.27 trillion won (US$1.13 billion) of the funds.
