The South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) is the mandated inter-governmental agency for tourism in the Pacific. The current full government membership comprises 17 Pacific countries; the Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Federated States of Micronesia, Timor Leste and American Samoa. In addition, the Peoples Republic of China is a full government member. SPTO is based in Suva and is funded by both Government and private sector member contributions. The European Union (EU) is a key development partner. The EU is funding the Pacific Regional Tourism Capacity Building Program (PRTCBP) as a key component under the overall Strengthening Pacific Economic Integration through Trade (SPEITT). The aim of the PRTCBP is to improve PACP economic integration through strengthened national systems and institutional frameworks to develop trade capacity, increase private sector competitiveness and increase international market access in the tourism sector. The Tourism Research Officer will undertake research on tourism, economic, social and corporate information, analyse data and report and present key outcomes to stakeholders and management at SPTO. Key outcomes for the Tourism Research Officer include: • Implement annual research plan: • Regular/routine research and data collection from country members • Targeted market research • Improve the quality and availability of information available to SPTO and members • Research and information collection for Market Watch production • Membership Information/intelligence services (NTO/Government) • Online documents/templates/guides using the RTRC • SPTO internal support for tourism statistical needs • Develop SPTO country members’ understanding of tourism research/ statistics. • Inform SPTO Executive and members on Tourism Statistics/ Intelligence. The person Maxumise seeks to recruit will have a Degree in Research and Statistics ideally tourism associated or related fields from a recognised institution. The incumbent must be a highly motivated individual with demonstrated statistical analysis and strong writing and research skills. The successful applicant will also need to demonstrate competence in: • Working as part of an inter-disciplinary and/or multi-cultural team • Analysing market research and developing action plans from the information • Designing research projects and presenting findings – research papers, statistics, special projects.
