The South Pole was conquered 12 years before the climbers reach the summit. The hostility of Berber tribes had kept the Atlas its status unknown lands until France invaded the country in 1912, making Morocco one of the last colonies in Africa. The first ascent of Toubkal was made in 1923 by a French expedition. Ten years later, a Polish mission explored the western atlas, before the Second World War put a stop to explore the mountains. After the war, the struggle for independence kept Europeans away until 1956, and it is for this reason that this mountain world, virtually unchanged for centuries, is best known for 40 years. The Atlas Mountains stretch across the southern Morocco, between the plains and cities bordering the Sahara desert. Marrakech is the gateway to the atlas, and terraces, you can see the horizon surrounded by snowy peaks, depending on the season. Berber tribes occupy the Atlas for millennia, and are a friendly and hospitable rude agricultural society.
