The Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre at Mars Hill College is currently presenting an extraordinary production of the great musical Gypsy. A huge and enormously talented cast spans an age range of at least 50; a guest dancer is so good he reminds one of the early Baryshnikov. But the showstopper is the great Liz Aiello. We have all come to expect only the best from this great singer and actress. Playing the penultimate stage mother of the great Gypsy Rose Lee, however, she gives us the performance of a lifetime. [Hers and ours.] No doubt drawing on her own experience as a singer, actor and real-life stage mama and wife, Liz pours her heart into the role. I promise you, her final number will leave you breathless. Last night, it brought the audience to its feet with a standing ovation richly deserved. It is a performance not to be missed.
