The Southern city of Bo that once for a very long time enjoys the envy as the 2nd city with fast growing basic necessities like constant electricity, reasonable water supply, private sector industrialization and a perfect night life that suits inhabitants as well as visitors looks to me on the brink of a decline. A weekend past I was in the city on a visit with friends which also coincided with the official visit of the President in both in Bo and Pujhum. What is dispiriting is fact that once a very lively, electrified and envy to live- in city is now almost a ghost town particularly during the evening. Visiting places like Black and White of all people, Viccani, Obama Bar and Restaurant, Valentino, former Aries now Jay Cee to name but a few will speak volume of the drastic decline in social activities in the city which can be the effect on difficult standards of living, decline in business and Job opportunities etc. Out of curiosity, I spoke to few people, some of whom I used to know as social activists, almost all of the said to me that now the action is in Makeni. By all indications they were saying that Makeni looks to be the center of concentration and attraction at the moment. Then I further asked if in the past there was action in Bo as well, and the answer I got is yes there was. So it left me to wonder how much the regional divide that is so strong within political lines have even degenerate to social life and its activities, suffering its people who happens to live within the regions that sits on the disadvantage at the moment. It looks to me that development is a gradual process and it can only be measured as progressive if we can maintained on areas we already had scored high on, as well as explore new areas to add to the already existing ones. I don’t think it’s reasonable to say that Bo should boom at the expense of makeni for instance or the reverse. There should not be a cause to make the people of mama salone feel that Bo is what it is now just so Makeni can be what it is at the moment. When once our leadership, political diversification, ethnic lines lead us to feel this way, its then a very serious concern for our country. The President visited the Bo Kenema power station to affirm the coming back of electricity to the cities as promised for the Friday 7th March 2014 but nothing happens up to when I left on Sunday evening. Wondering to know if it was sabotage on the government and the President or it’s the President that did not treat the issue very seriously.
