A 23-year old American dared to join the competition, which was meant to showcase Soviet cultural superiority, on the heels of their technological triumph the previous year of launching Sputnik, the first satellite in history. Guess who won the first Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition? The judges were obliged to ask Premier Nikita Kruschev for permission to award the prize to an American.
