The Soviet Union was named because it was intended to be a Union of Soviets. These Soviets were intended to have a lot of autonomy and be ruled by the workers, who had been first liberated from the Czar and then from Elitist Mancheveks. There was a civil war in Russia that last roughly two years. American troops actually did battle with the Red Army in support of the White Army. The All of Russia was anxious about the new future of equality and justice for all. They dreamed of a place where everyone would get an equal share, where the rich would finally pay their fair share and where the worker would finally have their dignity. The dream did not last long as Lenin consolidated power within the Communist Party and quickly resorted to terror tactics when the attempt to artificially manipulate the free market utterly failed. One of Lenins right-hand men was Stalin, who was willing to do whatever it took for the revolution. These men believed fully in the doctrine of by any means necessary. They believed that only the State could create the equality and justice that the people needed. They also believed that people were expendable, that the only real value of a person was in how they could serve the collective. When Lenin died, Stalin quickly moved to deify Lenin to rally the people around the Communists, which he did successfully (Lenins body is still a national icon in Moscow). It took him a few years, but eventually Stalin consolidated power. He proved to be more lethal than Lenin, practicing a total terror policy that saw millions murdered and millions more shipped off to forced slave labor in the Gulag and Siberia. When you remove individual liberty from your worldview, when you remove the inherit value of life for the sake of life alone, you create dark monsters willing to kill. If any of you is more afraid of big business than you are government, if any of you is more afraid of the trouble people might cause than the power government might wield, perhaps you should take the time to watch this documentary on the anatomy of a psychopath who had just the right political system to cultivate his monster within.
