The Spike Island Steering Committee congratulates the Naval Service on the commissioning of the LE Samuel Beckett. Nationwide visits the headquarters of the Irish Naval Service at Haulbowline in Cork Harbour. The programme focuses on life in the Navy and on its new vessel, LÉ Samuel Beckett, which was commissioned in Dublin on Saturday last. A team from the Irish Naval Service has spent the past two years over-seeing the construction of their new ship LÉ Samuel Beckett, in a port called Appledore in South-West England. Nationwide went to Appledore for the final sea trials, before joining the ship’s Captain Ken Minihane and his crew, as they prepared for Samuel Beckett’s first journey home. Also in the programme, reporter Fran McNulty joins the flagship of the Naval Service, the LÉ Eithne, on a routine patrol off the west coast to find out what daily life is like on board for the crew. https://youtube/watch?v=eETeViXBmk8
