The Spirit Lives 2014 - 2018 For nearly a decade, Lismore - TopicsExpress

The Spirit Lives 2014 - 2018 For nearly a decade, Lismore Workers Club has been the venue for the ANZAC Day Breakfast following the Dawn Service and prior to the March from Browns Creek Car Park to the Lismore War Memorial at the Memorial Baths. This year, 340 cooked breakfasts were served. City of Lismore RSL Sub Branch Honorary Secretary Wilson McClelland described the Workers Club as the only venue in town capable of accommodating the scale of the event. Ex-Serviceman Mathew Hill, who was Guest Speaker at the ANZAC Commemoration, delivered an interpretation of what a soldier during the Great War may have experienced and contrasted that with the experience of a service man or woman of today. Mathew served as a Peacekeeper in the Solomon Islands and saw active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and was discharged in 2012 after 12 years of service. Mathew’s father was in the Royal Australian Navy and his grandfather served in New Guinea during World War II. Mathew values the role the Returned Servicemen’s League plays in our communities. He was very grateful when he unexpectedly received a Care Package while on active duty and remembers the gesture lifted his spirits immensely. He also praised the ongoing support given to servicemen and servicewomen and their families upon returning to civilian life. Mathew reminded us that a journalist or film-makers version of a “glorious” war was very different to reality and he described ANZAC Day as not a celebration of any military victory but a remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
