The Spiritual Ponderings of a Simple Preacher Thursday, August 22, 2013 by Pastor Anthony Hovey The Lamp And The Light – Part 1 Psalms 119:105-112 Psalms 119:105-112… 105 Thy word (scriptures) is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. 106 I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments (rulings/regulations concerning right and wrong). 107 I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word (promises/principles). 108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments (rulings/regulations concerning right and wrong). 109 My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law (teachings). 110 The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts (guiding principles). 111 Thy testimonies (written instructions) have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart. 112 I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes (written laws) alway, even unto the end. In this, the fourteenth stanza of the 22 contained within this psalm, we find the psalmist declaring that the Word of God is the original “Global Positioning System” and “Navigation System” that can, with pinpoint accuracy show you where you presently stand and the path you personally need to follow… It can tell you if you are on or off track and how to stay or get back on track if you need too… The psalmist said it is The Lamp And The Light that guides us through life… It is The Word of God that reveals the Will of God… Listen, as he shares some thoughts on the Word of God… I. The Bible Guides Us (vv.105,107-108) 1. The Bible Guides Us In Our Walk (v.105)… 105 Thy word (scriptures) is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Proverbs 4:18 ESV… But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. Psalms 37:23… The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. 2. The Bible Guides Us In Our Weaknesses (v.107)… a. He Needed To Be Relieved From External Affliction (v.107a)… I am afflicted very much… Isaiah 54:17… No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD. Isaiah 43:2… When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. b. He Needed To Be Revived From Internal Depression (v.107b)… quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word (promises/principles)… Psalms 85:6… Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? Psalms 138:7… Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me. 3. The Bible Guides Us In Our Worship (v.108)… 108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments (rulings/regulations concerning right and wrong). Nehemiah 8:1-3,5-6,8-9… 1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel. 2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding… 3 And he read therein… from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law... 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up: 6 And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground… 8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. 9 And Nehemiah… Ezra… and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law. Selah, Think On These Things…
