The Spiritual Ponderings of a Simple Preacher Tuesday, September 10, 2013 by Pastor Anthony Hovey The B.I.B.L.E., That’s The Book For Me! – Part 3 Psalms 119:137-144 Psalms 119:137-144... 137 Righteous art thou, O LORD, and upright are thy judgments. 138 Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful. 139 My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words. 140 Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it. 141 I am small and despised: yet do not I forget thy precepts. 142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth. 143 Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights. 144 The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live. In this, the eighteenth stanza of the 22 contained within this psalm, we find the psalmist still occupied with the Word… Even the most casual reading of Psalms 119 leaves no doubt that his Bible is his most prized and precious possession…In verse 103 and 127, he wrote… How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!... Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold… In essence he said, If I were given a choice between wealth and the Word, I would choose the Word of God over the wealth of this world… How much is your Bible worth to you? Is it worth enough that you would read it? That you would heed it? That you feel that you need it? My friend, I believe that our attitude toward our Bible parallels our attitude toward our God… Many things could perhaps be said about the writer of Psalms 119, but one thing is certainly true; he loved the Word of God and he loved the God of the Word… I hope the same can be said of all of us… Let’s begin our study by looking first at… I. The Conclusions He Disclosed (vv.137-138,142,144a) 1. What He Concluded About God’s Character (vv.137,142a)… a. God Is Pure In His Character… Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalms 92:15 b. God Is Perfect In His Conduct… 2 Samuel 22:31a; Matthew 5:48 c. God Is Peerless In His Comparison… Isaiah 43:10-11; Isaiah 44:8b; Isaiah 45:5a 2. What He Concluded About God’s Commandments (vv.138,142b,144a)… a. God’s Word Is Relevant… Deuteronomy 6:6-7a,2; Ephesians 6:4 b. God’s Word Is Reliable… Mark 13:31; John 6:68 (i) God’s Word Will Keep You From Sinning… Psalms 119:11; Psalms 17:4b (ii) God’s Word Will Keep You From Straying… Psalms 119:105; Psalms 119:130. c. God’s Word Is Rewarding… Joshua 1:7-8; Revelation 22:14; Psalms 32:11 II. The Contrast He Drew (vv.139-141,143) 1. He Had Remained Faithful To God’s Word (vv.139a,140-141,143)… a. The Devotion He Declared For God’s Word (vv.139a,141)… Psalms 119:30,33,44,57,88,101,106,112 b. The Delight He Derived From God’s Word (vv.140,143)… Psalms 12:6; Proverbs 30:5; Psalms 119:24; Psalms 119:47; Psalms 26:5-6; Psalms 1:1-2. 2. They Had Renounced Faithfulness To God’s Word (v.139b)… a. They Willfully Rejected The Authority Of The Word… Jeremiah 8:9; Romans 1:22; Jeremiah 6:15,19. b. They Willfully Rejected The Author Of The Word… 1 Samuel 8:7; John 12:48 III. The Counsel He Desired (v.144b) 144b give me understanding, and I shall live. 1. He Wanted To Learn The Word… He Knew That A Life Pleasing To God Was A Life Based Upon The Word Of God… Psalms 143:8… Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee… Psalms 25:8… Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way… Psalms 32:8… I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. 2. He Wanted To Live The Word… He Knew That A Life Pleasing To God Was A Life Bound By The Word Of God… 2 Timothy 3:16-17… 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works… Deuteronomy 29:29… The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
