The “Sporting Snippets Hall of Fame” This week we re-focus on the “Sporting Snippets Hall of Fame” Feature, and it is with great pleasure that we present a nomination for David Thompson. Although Davy is currently highly involved in an administrative nature with Comber Rec, he had a marvelous and inspiring career as a player. From his days in the late 1950s with 3rd Ards BB he contributed immensely to the development of the game locally and, when the Newtownards Junior Summer League operated in 1954, he performed heroics in goals for Cardy Rovers Juniors. When the Cardy League introduced locally-organised winter football to the district, David underlined his goal-keeping talents with Ards United and later he became a regular with the Comber Rec Club in the Amateur League. In 1961 it was the Newtownards Factory League which witnessed the further stage of progress in the playing career of David Thompson and when that Competition organised its very first representative fixture that summer, it was the Ulster Print Works ‘keeper David Thompson who was the first name on the selectors’ team-sheet. In the early 60s, with Ards Olympic in the Minor League, Davy made a dramatic switch to centre-forward and his ability as a goal-scorer earned him the nick-name “Goal-a-Match Davy.” His retirement from playing, after a distinguished and prominent Contribution to the forward progress of the local game, found him engaging fully into the many aspects of committee work at Comber Rec, and the amiable David is still very much a valued and highly-respected worker at Park Way. His many decades of unstinting and selfless work to the advantage of the game and his gifted and proficient input to the sport of football have truly earned David Thompson a worthy place in the “Sporting Snippets Hall of Fame.”
