The Sprat Catcher Who Could Be Heard At Congresbury. Weston fishermen have been recorded catching sprats in the fisheries around Birnbeck as far back as 1491. A vital part of the job was scaring away the voracious seagulls. It became vital for the fishermen to have a loud voice. Eventually there was even a hut built on the Island and permanent Gull Yellers installed. The greatest of these was reputed to be Bill Hurle of Ashcombe. E. Baker the Weston Historian recorded that many affirm to hearing it on Congresbury Bridge eight miles away. Page 33 Weston-super-Mare Look Back with Laughter John Bailey 1986.
