The Sprat Catcher Who Could Be Heard At Congresbury. Weston fishermen have been recorded catching sprats in the fisheries around Birnbeck as far back as 1491. A vital part of the job was scaring away the voracious seagulls. It became vital for the fishermen to have a loud voice. Eventually there was even a hut built on the Island and permanent Gull Yellers installed. The greatest of these was reputed to be Bill Hurle of Ashcombe. E.
