The Steen house is so-named for its builder, not its material. It is early (1720) for the area (Rochester) and is particular in its large square footprint and steep gable pitch, both aspects which compare with the early Huguenot dwellings of Hurley, New Paltz & Ellenville. The house has grown in a sympathetic and well-proportioned manner and appears today to be in good repair.A seam in the stone work of the gable end shows the building was widened at some early time. The Skytop tower at Mohonk is within view of this rural location.
