The Story of My Life: Ideals and Track Record that Drives Me March 1, 2013 at 6:55am Background 44 years ago, I, Samuel Kuntai Ole Tunai, was born in a humble and ordinary Maasai family, in our pristine and beautiful Narok County. Like many ordinary families, my parents struggled to raise me up and take to me to school. Thankfully, as the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. The Narok community raised me, helping me to script a testimony of hope and unwavering dreams, despite my humble pedigree. Frankly, it was not all smooth. Walking to school barefoot and in an empty stomach was to influence my outlook towards life and giving back. I swore, under my watch, no child will ever go through what I experience. Against all odds, I pulled myself through primary and high school. I believed that, in this endowed county and indeed country, there was space for a diligent dreamer. I joined the University of Nairobi where I studied Public Administration and International Relations. This gave me local and international outlook of life and how to inspire people. Dreams and Ambitions I served in the civil service, learning the true ideals of servant leadership and the need to always put the interest of the public first. After a stint in Government, I ventured into business, and yet again, with Narok community and indeed Kenyans’ support, I succeeded. I now have successful ventures in livestock farming, tourism, agriculture and real estate. Philanthropy: Giving Back The true meaning of life, I believe, is to plant trees whose shades you will not shelter under – to empower others and leave a legacy. I grew up with sheer indebtedness to the community and appreciation of my humble beginnings. To this end, I have always given back. Supporting Education Education always ranks highly in my agenda. I initiated a robust bursary scheme that currently supports over 100 needy students. I donate 20% of my monthly earnings to the scheme. Over the years, working with the community, I have built over 20 classrooms, dining halls and hostels around Narok County. I have also donated volumes of books and participated in community fundraising initiatives. Environmental Initiatives We have a duty as humanity, to bequeath to future generations, a clean environment. To this end, I am a committed conservationist. In 2005, for instance, I set aside 200 acres of my farm for afforestation. I have over 200,000 assorted trees that have created a micro-climate in my area. A green Narok, I am convinced, is possible. Youth I am firm believer in the ability, creativity and enterprise of the youth. I hold dearly that the time for our youth is now! Not tomorrow. In this regard, I initiated the Mara Youth Enterprise Forum in 2009 to provide a platform for the youth mentorship. This Foundation hosts over 5,000 students, school leavers, teachers and other elite for an annual education and motivation week. With over 10 sessions so far, we are raising a generation of achievers in Narok! I have also promoted youth sports and recreation in the county. I believe that we can, and we shall be, a bastion of talent in the world. With stars such as David Rudisha inspiring a generation of dreamers, under my leadership, we shall breed hundreds of heroes! Agriculture I am a tried and tested farmer. I have our pastoralists to upgrade our cattle to Sahiwal breeds that fetch more income. I have donated over 100 pedigree Sahiwal bulls to the community with thousands of farmers now reaping fruits of this. Visionary: Unifier and Champion of Integration I believe in the ideals of integration. I preach tolerance and peace as the ideal pillars of development in Narok County. I beleive in diversity and opportunity for all, irrespective of race, creed, gender, tribe, sub-tribe, clan, age, disability and background. In my story, the child in Narok, can project his dreams and believe in the possibility, irrespective of his or her background. As long as God keeps me alive, I pledge, to work with the community to shatter forever, the shackles and walls of poverty, disease, hopelessness and ignorance. Narok, it is possible! Unfolding to us, is a dawn of hope, prosperity and a dignified. Invest in the right person. I will be your selfless servant. Vision and Plans for Narok County Our Journey to Prosperity and Greatness as Narok County is hinged on the following abiding and timeless values which I hold dear to my heart: a) Accountability – Annual Report, Website that tracks, published reports, hotline to report corruption and an annual “state of the County Address to the public. b) Honesty and Integrity – Beyond reproach c) Humility – Accessible to you; I am your servant! ...We need Servant leadership at the helm of the Narok County Government in order to transform our County into a Super County of World Class repute! d) Equity and Fairness – My County government will not discriminate against tribe, sub-tribe, religion, clan, gender, background, literacy level, disability or even age! We are all equal and shall benefit fairly! e) Inclusion – Ensure that ALL participate! My government will be all inclusive and will reach out to all the corners of the county and ensure that everyone gets on-board and benefits from our development agenda. Tuko Pamoja!
