The Story of the Cross - Day 10 The Cross (Matthew 27:35-37; Mark 15:25-26; Luke 23:33-34) The Persians probably invented Crucifixion, but the Romans perfected it. It was the most grueling form of execution imaginable. It was designed to produce a slow death with maximum pain and suffering. It was one of the most disgraceful and cruel methods of execution and usually was reserved only for slaves, foreigners, revolutionaries, and the vilest of criminals. Jesus had two spikes, 5 to 7 inches long, driven through His wrists. Then one spike was driven through His feet that were laid on top of each other.
