It was believed the cars collided and rolled into the nearby bush where they burst into flames. Among the deceased were two police officers; the other was a lawyer but this was not verified. It was reported that a lawyer had left a nearby farm that evening and was on his way back to the city where he lived. The bodies and cars were burnt beyond recognition and no foul play was suspected. Upon reading the story, Van der Rogue was relieved that the investigators suspected no foul play. However, it turned out he was wrong to relax. Later that morning police investigators came to the farm to ask Miss Kettle a few questions and then left. Miss Kettle had told the police that Barrister Switch had left after they had had dinner; she even called Pinto to come and verify her story and Pinto told police he saw the Barrister leave the previous night. It seemed that the police were satisfied with the information, as they had told Miss Kettle and Pinto that they were just following procedure. After Miss Kettle offered them breakfast and coffee, the officers left, smiling and raving about the delightful meal. They asked to meet the woman who had made it, shook Mrs Funeral’s hand and thanked her. This all worked to Miss Kettle and Van der Rogue’s advantage. Van der Rogue had remained in his cottage until the police had left. The workers were out in the vineyards as it was harvest time. Later that day, Barrister Switch’s partner called to ask Miss Kettle to come to their office in the city. He told them of Barrister Switch’s death and Miss Kettle told him they had heard about the tragic accident. The partner was very angry because he said those two policemen were corrupt and one never really knew what they might have done to Switch, whose wife had been looking for him for days. It turned out Switch had lied about his whereabouts to both his partner and wife whilst staying on the farm. He wanted to make some cash for himself and did not want his partner in on it because if he had told him, he would have wanted to come and be included in the process. Switch had wanted to do this alone. Miss Kettle sent her condolences once again and confirmed that she and Van der Rogue would come and hear the execution of the will the following morning. After she hung up the phone, she ran to Van der Rogue’s cottage and sneaked in beside him. She kissed him and they made love. She told Van der Rogue about the phone call and how they would never be caught because everything was working in their favour. She thanked him for being brave and taking charge. She was elated and so was he. He knew then he had become unstoppable. The next morning, they went to town to meet with the lawyer who executed Mr Chadwick’s will to them. Most of the fixed assets went to Miss Kettle but Van der Rogue had inherited most of Mr Chadwick money, millions of it. Part of the winery was given to the workers, Funeral and his wife received five hundred thousand rand and the other workers inherited ten thousand rand each. Trash was appointed to manage the portion of the winery that had been handed over to the workers. Mr Chadwick had begged Miss Kettle and Van der Rogue to make sure that the workers kept their cottages at the farm. When Miss Kettle made this announcement to the workers at the dinner she hosted for them, they were delighted. She told Funeral and his wife about the money in private the following morning and they were so happy that Funeral cried and thanked Mr Chadwick. He lamented about how much he missed him. This also moved Miss Kettle to tears as she thought about her husband’s kind heart and generosity. There would be no other like him. She also felt free to cry for the first time since he had died because Van der Rogue was not around when she delivered the news to Funeral and his wife. He was still celebrating the news of his riches and had gone to visit friends at a nearby farm. They were two brothers with whom he used to play as a little boy. Mr Chadwick always took him along to visit their parents on their farm. The farm had a pub where the farmers and their families would gather; the men would watch rugby, the women would cook and the children would play in the big yard. Funeral and his wife thanked Miss Kettle and left to continue with their work. Miss Kettle went to her bedroom in the main house, buried herself under the duvet and bawled. She wished her mother was still around, but she was not. Miss Kettle had no friends. As she lay there crying under the darkness of the duvet, she decided she would seize the opportunity she had been given, the second chance to live her life to the fullest. She would turn over a new leaf and live a life that a woman her age was supposed to live: a life full of energy, travel, friends and love. She knew exactly what she needed to do to achieve this kind of life. She started smiling and giggled as she thought excitedly about the good life that awaited her.
