The Sunon Asogli Power Company is pursuing plans for the installation of a $1-billion, 600-700-megawatt coal-fired power plant. The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, who announced this last Monday, said his partners, the Shenzen Energy Group of China, also planned to add 360 megawatts of power to the Sunon Asogli Power Plant before the end of the year. The Asogli plant currently supplies about 14 per cent of power distributed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Togbe Afede was speaking at the launch of the 10th anniversary of his enthronement as the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State in Accra. The occasion also marked the launch of the 2013 Yam Festival of the chiefs and people of the Asogli State. On October 4, 2003, the kingmakers of the Asogli State enthroned Togbe Afede as the Agbogbomefia after he had been captured and confined for nine days, as custom demanded. Known in private life as Mr James Akpo, Togbe Afede is a member of the Akpo Royal Family of Ho Bankoe. As a result of the development that Togbe Afede has brought to the people of the Asogli State since he was enthroned, people from all walks of life, particularly from the Volta Region, thronged the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) to be part of the launch of the anniversary, which is being marked on the theme: “Traditional Leadership and Development Redefined”. The anniversary and the 2013 Yam Festival, which begin on August 10, 2013, will be climaxed with a grand durbar in Ho on September 21, 2013. Addressing the gathering, Togbe Afede said the Sunon Asogli Power Company was also interested in investing in wind and solar energy in support of the government’s objective of generating 10 per cent renewable energy. In the agricultural sector, he said, he was in the second year of integrated livestock and crop development on over 30,000 hectares of land, with an initial investment of about $120 million. He added that he was committed to the development of the beach front of Accra, under the Gold Coast City Project, with a $1.5 billion development capital. Unveiling his plan to assist the needy in the country, Togbe Afede announced that he would soon launch the Ghana Medical Aid Fund to help meet part of the medical expenses of sick people who made appeals for assistance. Conflict Resolution He said the desire to help strengthen the peace and unity of Ghana had been the reason the people of Asogli embarked on fraternal visits to many traditional areas in the country. He explained that he would, therefore, work towards the resolution of all outstanding conflicts in the Volta Region in the next five years as his contribution to strengthening peace and unity in the country. In an address read on his behalf, President John Dramani Mahama re-echoed his commitment to abide by the ruling of the Supreme Court in the ongoing 2012 presidential election petition. He asked all Ghanaians to be prepared to accept the verdict of the court to ensure peaceful development. President Mahama commended Togbe Afede for his commitment to the development of the Volta Region and the country in general.
