The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to release Sahara chief Subrata Roy from Tihar on bail till March 25, the next date of hearing on his plea for release on the ground that his detention order was illegal and should be quashed. A special bench of justices K S Radhakrishnan and JS Khehar rejected Roys arguments for release before the courts Holi recess which begins on Friday. Roys lawyer Ram Jethmalani sought bail for him on any condition to be set by the court to permit him to meet his family, his ailing mother and also celebrate holi. Lawyer for the other two directors jailed along with Roy in tihar senior advocate Rajeev dhavan contended that the court was effectively asking for a bail bond of Rs 20000 crore, an amount impossible to raise by anybody. The bench however would not hear anything of it, instead saying: the key is with you. You can make any proposal. The bench then posted the case for hearing on March 25, 2014.
