The Swallows Left Without Me Yesterday I had the great pleasure - TopicsExpress

The Swallows Left Without Me Yesterday I had the great pleasure of visiting Mission San Juan Capistrano where the famous swallows return every year on March 19 (remember the song?). The swallows, like our Purple Martins, migrate every year between Argentina and their North American summer home. Normally the swallows begin their southern migration in mid-October, so they had already left before I visited the Mission, but I was able to see many of their homes and nests. I also had a great discussion with several of the people working at the Mission. I was intrigued to learn that a few years ago the Mission set up a speaker system to play swallow sounds to help attract the birds that often get confused by unfamiliar urban sounds. It is interesting that this approach to help the swallows works on the same principal that we us when we recommend the Songbird Magnet to play purple martin sounds to help attract purple martins to new and established colonies. urbannaturestore.ca/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=60 Paul Oliver
