The TAP funded project in Baa Maalhos titled, Sustainable Water - TopicsExpress

The TAP funded project in Baa Maalhos titled, Sustainable Water Management & Community Awareness, has finalised the drawings of the water management facility. Further, land identified for the facility has being cleared and procurement for rainwater tanks and building materials have being placed. This is a joint initiative by Maalhos Awareness and Recreation Society and the Tourism Adaptation project run in collaboration with Ministry of Tourism and UNDP. Once completed, the facility can store and supply up to 850 tonnes of rainwater to the community. The facility will also be equipped with an RO plant to cope with rainwater shortages anticipated in the dry seasons. Furthermore, as part of the project, distribution network pipes will be laid down to the distribution points built. Additionally, awareness on sustainable management and use of water will be an ongoing part of the project The project was inspired by the recommendations of the TAP study on “Addressing Barriers to Effective Climate Change Adaptation in the Water and Wastewater Services in Resorts and Dependent Communities”. Some of the recommendations of the study taken on-board by this pilot project in Maalhos include: -Promote low cost yet, socially accepted, technologies for drinking water and sewerage that could be installed, sustained, operated, and maintained at the community level. -Promote Rain Water Harvesting as the first and natural source of fresh water for the communities’ supply. -Address the lack of space for rainwater storage by promoting new technology solutions for underground storage. -Supply all the households using Rain Water Harvesting with simple and low cost filtering. TAP project and its partners hope that this pilot project increases the resiliency of the island community to climate change by being able to source their water from a sustainable source and further demonstrates sustainable management of water and scope for harvesting rainwater that could be emulated in communities elsewhere in the Maldives.
