The Tabernacle Exodus 25:31-40 The Golden Candlestick 31 And you shall make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same. 32 And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side 33 Three bowls made like unto almonds, with a knop and a flower in one branch; and three bowls made like almonds in the other branch, with a knop and a flower: so in the six branches that come out of the candlestick. 34 And in the candlestick shall be four bowls made like unto almonds, with their knops and their flowers. 35 And there shall be a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, according to the six branches that proceed out of the candlestick. 36 Their knops and their branches shall be of the same: all of it shall be one beaten work of pure gold. 37 And you shall make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it. 38 And the tongs thereof; and the snuffdishes thereof shall be of pure gold. 39 Of a talent of pure gold shall he make it, with all these vessels. 40 And look that you make them after their pattern, which was shewed you in the Mount. Candlestick should have been translated Lamp stand as candles were not used but oil was burnt to provide light. The complete lamp stand, excluding the seven lamps which were separate, was formed out of one single piece of gold weighing some 35kg which would represent a cube of about 5 inches. There were no dimensions given as to its exact size — who can measure the light of God? The craftsmanship required to complete the work, bearing in mind it had to be beaten into shape from a single piece, not cast or moulded, was truly remarkable and considered to be extremely difficult if not impossible to achieve in our times but, for God all things are possible. He instructed Moses, See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, to carry out the work saying, I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass. The lamp stand consisted of an ornate base out of which rose a main, central, vertical shaft. On opposite sides three branches protruded out wards curving upwards. Each of the six branches and the vertical shaft terminated in a cup to receive its lamp. Six is mans number, falling short of Gods perfect number seven, but with the central shaft being a type of Christ, man is complete in Christ (John 15:5). As already mentioned, the lamp stand was made from a single piece, one beaten work of pure gold meaning that the branches were not welded, soldered or fastened to the side of the main stem, but were rather a part of the main shaft speaking of our being in Christ. The gold was beaten, enduring punishment as our Saviour, He was bruised for our iniquities.” (Isaiah 53:5). The bowls or cups formed the first ornament on each branch, and are likened to almonds, which signify the Resurrection (Num. 17:1-8). The knops could have been translated pomegranates which speak of fruit. The flowers could have been translated lilies and speak of purity. The lily-blossoms supported the lamps, which were separate. Although the outer branches were longer than the inner branches, all of them had the same number of ornamentation. This tells us that all Believers can enjoy Resurrection Life, bear fruit, and develop purity. All done by the Holy Spirit, because of the Cross (I Cor. 1:23). The main centre shaft had four bowls along with four knops and four flowers making twelve ornaments, which speaks of the Government of Christ. Moses was instructed to follow the Pattern exactly, which means it was not to be deviated from in any capacity. This tells us that the Work of the Spirit in our hearts and lives must be carried out strictly on Gods Terms, and His Terms alone. No outsider could see the beauty of the golden lamp stand but only the outer covering of badger skins. Today, by faith, only believers can see the Gold, know the beauty of Christ and His union with the Church. The person without the Holy Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he or she cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned (1 Cor. 2:14).
