The Taliban-Bergdahl exchange cost $1 million and was illegal. The Obama administration spent nearly $1 million in May to send five Taliban Guantanamo detainees to Qatar in exchange for Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, a prisoner of war of who was held in captivity by militants for five years. The story looks touching and inspiring (if the sum is not mentioned) - our fellow countryman was rescued one way or another, wasnt he? But there are some facts left unmentioned. Here we have a soldier who deserted from his unit and ended up in captivity and we ended up paying over $1 million for his rescue and released 5 terrorists in exchange. The 5 released have already said they will continue to plan and execute attacks on the US - Guantanamo didnt seem to change their minds at all. This place is a separate subject, but still - should they have been released? The third fact that leaves completely no joy from Bergdahls rescue is that all that expensive and dangerous act was absolutely illegal. United States Department of Defense used appropriated funds to carry out the transfer when no money was available for that purpose, therefore DOD violated the Antideficiency Act - $988,400 the Pentagon spent to transfer the Taliban five came from the Armys Operations and Maintenance appropriation. And some more figures - it costs about $2.5 million to keep a single prisoner in Guantanamo for one year. Sounds weird if we remember all the problem spheres of american life left without sponsorship. Thats how the taxpayers money are spent. #bergdahl #taliban #taxes
