The Teaching Practice Office is aware that there are students who cheat the system by not completing the teaching practice sessions as per their module requirements. What follows below are the issues we have picked up: •Students do not complete their teaching practice and ask school principals/Head Masters to sign the time register for the full period; •Students spend a few hours at schools instead of doing as they have been requested in Tutorial Letter 102/0/2015 that they should ‘start the school day with all the teachers and leave when all the teachers leave at the end of the school day’; •Students do not want to do their teaching practice and claim that they have made arrangements with their module-lecturers for their recognition of prior learning and that, in any case, teaching practice is not important. The University’s Students’ Disciplinary Code ‘aims at ensuring the integrity of the academic processes and assuring the quality of the assessment procedures thereof.’ Furthermore, the code specifies that: ‘ A student is guilty of misconduct if she/he: Knowingly makes a false statement about the University or otherwise intentionally provides materially false information to anyone in-or outside of the University about the University.’ The Code further states that after finding a student guilty of misconduct, the Students’ Disciplinary Committee may impose one or more of the following sanctions among others: •A fine not exceeding twice the annual tuition fee for the full first year of study of the qualification for which the student is registered; •Denial of the opportunity to register for a particular study module or course offered by the University; •Annulment of examination results and /or withdrawal of a credit(s) obtained in a study modules and or courses. Furthermore, it should be noted that the College of Education is currently investigating the alleged transgressors with the aim of handing them over to the Disciplinary Committee. We wish to thank the whistle-blowers for alerting us to the malpractices and hope that all our students will continue to assist us in running a credible Unisa teaching practice. Yours faithfully, ……………………………………………………….. Prof MW Maila Manager: Teaching Practice
