The Telegraph published an article entitled: American Way: It is time to curb the great American sugar rush? It goes on - as the costs of Americas obesity epidemic continues to soar, a vote to tax fizzy drinks could herald a change in attitudes to a nations sugar addiction... The Food Doctor says this week is World Diabetes Day, so the focus on the obesity epidemic and sugar is vital. We are currently a nation that keeps on getting fatter and sicker and we are at the top of the European league table for obesity and fall closely behind America for our size and our dietary habits – something that needs to change if we are going to win the battle against bulging waistlines! So just why is sugar so deadly? Well your body only needs about 1-2 teaspoons of sugar circulating in your blood at any one time to give all of your cells the energy they need to go about their functions. With some soft drinks containing 6-9 teaspoons of sugar this delivers a shot of sugar that greatly exceeds what the body needs. The complication comes from the fact that the only way you can reduce the sugar levels is to burn it off as energy. But if you are sitting at a desk or in front on the TV then burning off the excess isn’t going to happen. The only other option the body has in order to get blood sugar levels back to the acceptable range of 1-2 teaspoons is to convert any excess sugar info fat and chuck it into storage and this why our waistlines are expanding at such an alarming rate.
