The Third Commandment of God which makes the First Commandment of the Church is well violated by modern man who is consciously or unconsciously removing God from his life. Why not totally denying God, he lives to put God there above while he is busy chasing the affairs of the world below. The technological and socio-economical challenges and the chase of money make him think-less of the presence of God. Also the cry for human right and freedom (while remaining always in chains) makes one to feel that he/she can choose to go or not to go to Church. Sometimes spiritually justifying it with Jesus’ words, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath” (Mk 2:27) or ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices(Matt 9:13; Hos 6:6). Modern man also tries to justify why one should work on Sunday quoting “Let him who does not work, not eat” (2Thes 3:10), or “Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth” (Prov 10:4; 12:27). But forgetting that, “the Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment” (Prov 9:10)”, and “Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked (Ps 37:16; Prov 15:16). Some even argue that going to Church is not a guarantee to heaven, even when being faithfully present in the Church makes way to heaven. The truth is, if you are a child of God, you will not compromise your special time with God on Sunday or disobey Him (cf Jn 14:15). Of course, God comes first in all you do. Being a social worker or medical worker or in the military is not an excuse not to go to Church on Sunday when you are off duty; and if you are on duty, finding time to either go to Sunday Vigil Mass (Saturday evening) or early Sunday Mass or Sundasy evening Mass. If your work is interfering with your Sunday worship of God, should you quit that job even in the face of unemployment? TO BE CONTINUED Be Blessed
