The Three Levels of Certainty The pillar of Islamic tenet is to believe in the eternal unseen world while you are still living in this phase of trial that is called life. Quran reads: This is the Scripture whereof there is no doubt for the pious who believe in the Unseen and establish prayer and spend (for the needy) of that which We have bestowed upon them. [Quran 2/2-3]. However, the word Certainty (Arabic: يقيـــن) was mentioned one time as a reference to Death, based on the fact that death is the sole certainty during our worldly phase of life. However, the word Certainty was also mentioned three other times with different meaning for each time. According to Quran, there are three levels/phases of Certainty: (1) The Knowledge of Certainty Arabic: (علم اليقين) This the only level of Certainty attainable during this life which is the highest form of solid faith that takes a human being to new and wider horizons of belief, horizons of the infinite truth of eternal life of the hereafter that lies beyond the scope of dimensional limitations of space and time. Such knowledge of certainty is reached through the evidences, revelations, or the proves by which one reach certainty of the truth of the Quran as the final Word or message of Allah to humanity. By other words, to live in a state of patience and content, and work hard in this life to build not to destroy, to love not to hate, with your heart tied to eternity, as if you are watching the balance erected on judgement day .. as if youre watching the transgressors in eternal hell-fire, and the righteous rewarded in eternal paradise. The knowledge of Truth is mentioned in the following verses: You are distracted by multiplication (worldly gains), until you visited the graves. Nay, you will know, and nay, you will know. Nay, if you know the Knowledge of Certainty, you would have seen the hell-fire, then, you will see it the Vision of Certainty, then you will be asked concerning pleasure. [Quran 102/1-8] (2) The Eye of Certainty, Arabic: (عيــن اليقيـن) This is mentioned in the same verses quoted above. This is the phase of visual perception that will take place right after death when the ultimate truth of the unseen is revealed. Quran reads: And the agony of of death came in truth. This is what you have been diverting away from. And the trumpet is blown (the second trumpet of resurrection), This is the day of (fulfilling) the promises taken. And every spirit came along with it a driver and a witness. You was in heedlessness of this, so We have removed your covering, thus, your vision today is iron (i.e. piercing). [Quran 50/19-22]. Its also the visual perception to be experienced during all the long stages after death until people settle down in their eternal abides, i.e. resurrection, the gathering (for reckoning), the balancing of deeds, the retaliation between the aggressors and the victims of persecution, the scattering of the scrolls (results), the passage of the bridge path above hell-fire, and the delivering of every spirit to its eternal abide. (3) The Truth of Certainty. Arabic: (حــق اليقيـن) Now this is the tangible experience of the pleasure of Paradise or the torment of hell-fire after reckoning. Quran reads: So, I Wont swear by the locations of the stars(*), and its verily a tremendous oath, if you know .. That this is a Noble Quran In a book preserved from falsehood Shall not be touched save the purified .. Is it this statement that you are in a state of hypocrisy therewith?! and make denial thereof your livelihood?! Why, then, when it (i.e. the soul) reaches the throat, while you are looking at this moment, and We are nearer to him (the deceased) than you are, but you see not, why, then, if you are not in bondage (to reckoning) why dont you return it (the soul) back if you are truthful?! Thus, if he/she is of those brought nigh, So, a comfort (from hardships), a beautiful smell (of Paradise to be smelled from a distance of 500 years), and Garden of delight. And if he is among those those of the right-hand, so peace (greetings) for you from the right-hand folks (We shall receive our scrolls/results of reckoning by our right hands in case of Paradise, and with left hand in case of hell-fire, and with our backs in case of tyrants & transgressors), But if he is of those who denied who went astray, then, the reward is boiling water, and roasting in hell-fire. Lo! This is the Truth of Certainty, therefore, praise the name of your Lord, the tremendous. [Quran 56/75-96] (*) the tremendous oath by the locations of the stars, not the stars here is a scientific reference to the fact that when we are looking to the stars, we are actually looking to their locations, they may have already been moved away or even exploded by the end of their life cycle in a supernova and we will see the light of this explosion in a hundred million years or so, this is because of the huge distances measured by Light Years, the solar radiation reaches a distance of one astronomical unit in 8 minutes, you do the math for Alpha Centauri.
