The Tonga Whale Watching Guide Course is confirmed. The Government of Tonga has recently introduced the Whale Watching and Swimming Regulations 2013. The regulations, along with the whale watch industry and Tongan governments desire to improve the service delivery in the industry have led to the development of this course. The course development and delivery in this first instance is a partnership between the Tonga Business Enterprise Centre (TBEC), Southern Cross University (SCU), Ministry of Tourism (MoT) and the Tonga Whale Watching Operator Association (TWWOA) will now be delivered by TBEC. This has been made possible through the work of TBEC’s Private Sector Training Program, funded by the New Zealand Government through the New Zealand Aid Programme and the Tonga Whale Watching Operators Association (TWWOA). The 2013 course will be delivered over 4 full days in 3 islands and the dates are as follows: Tongatapu, Nuku’alofa – start 17 June 2013 Haʻapai, Pangai – start 24 June 2013 The training will allow for up to 60 participants (20 in each location) in total and at this stage this is the only scheduled training for 2013. Criteria applied for 2013: One applicant ONLY per 2012 Whale Whatching Operation License (please provide scan of your 2012 license). One Guide ONLY per New Operator (not license in 2012) upon Business License and Tourism license (mentioning whale watching activities) presentation/scan. Other applicants/participants should come independently (no support letter from operators will be accepted) and applications will cover the remaining seats available on the basis of 1st come 1st served. Once all the registrations are completed, TBEC will review the applications and provide further information to each operator.
