The Top 10 Phish Jams of 2013 (so far): 4. Twist, Atlantic City 11/1 – Look, old goofy hyper-creative music-deconstructing Phish isn’t coming back, and I think we’re all cool with that now. But it never hurts to get glimpses of that old Phish every now and then – the “Heartbreaker set,” all the goofy “bush/kush” stuff, “Piper” rolling into “Takin’ Care of Business” so easily you’d think they were playing it in a tiny college auditorium as part of 16 shows in 18 nights. And then there’s this jam, which combines elements of that old Phish in the “Under Pressure” jam – sure, they might have rehearsed it more in 1993 with the full knowledge they’d segue into it at some point, but the sloppy euphoria of finding it on the fly is just as fun – with the multi-faceted new Phish, a band capable of playing music that floats from darkness to a brilliant near-composed jam (you can almost hear Mike yelling “get me that mp3!” the second the jam ended) to said “Under Pressure” jam to a final glorious climax, cooking up a mélange of everything we know and love about Phish. This might not be the best “Twist” ever (that’s either Fukuoka, Island Tour, or Riverbend), but this will probably end up the most beloved “Twist.” A masterpiece.
