The Top 25 Horror Films of All Time! #23. Silent Night, Deadly Night, US 1984, Director, Charles E. Sellier, Jr. They actually made this movie. So much public outrage spurred boycotts and studio damage control, it became a dirty secret during the holiest of holiday seasons, and overwhelmed the actual movie itself after all was said and done. A basic slasher revenge story cloaked in holiday garb sent everyone running into the corners, its legend stands under the blinking lights of its initial fury, leaving a charred effigy of KVLT Horror. There are some amusing kills, but its real energy comes from the fish-eye treatment of the Catholic orphanage setting, its wintry isolation builds upon the mental suffocation which plagues the titular slasher. The Mother Superior character so out-menaces everyone in the movie, they bring her back-or out-for the finale. Ultimately though, its bark never lived up to its bite, but it was so gnarly an idea-and some crazy assholes decided to pull it off-that it still stands the time.
