Initially dogged by sci-fi nerds and horror acolytes alike, John Carpenters The Thing has since become video gold. Its a cult classic nowadays. Set in the Antarctic, a team of researchers become host to an extraterrestrial plague that visits them from under the snow pack, causing ruin and general horror shenanigans for a good 100 minutes of so. A loose remake of some sic-fi Western, Carpenter pays homage to it and does his own deal, too. Kurt Russell is unstoppable as Mac, reigning his weary resources for the beleaguered snow-bound crew, including an unforgettable Wilford Brimley as the resident doc whos all good until he changes. He has bigger plans. Again, Im stumped by the initial critical response-how can one just say no to Huskys transmogrifying or torn off heads turning into spiders?
