The Town of Estes Park recently launched a new community partnership allowing residents and businesses to sponsor the purchase and installation of a public bear-resistant trash/recycling container. The first round of sponsors were Bill Miller, the League of Women Voters and Community Recycling Committee, Bears Are Us and an anonymous resident. The first sponsored container was unveiled July 21 at a presentation in Bond Park for the America in Bloom judges. The presentation highlighted Estes Parks recycling efforts and was given by Judi Smith of the League of Women Voters and the Community Recycling Committee. Mayor Pro Tem Wendy Koenig said of the sponsors Today we honor and thank these individuals for their generosity and support of a wildlife-friendly community. She continued We believe they serve as role models to the community, reminding us all that we play a part of the solution, and that Estes cares about bears. In 2013, the Town replaced approximately 30 public trash containers with bear-resistant containers; 24 of these were in partnership with the League of Women Voters and Community Recycling Committee. The Town planned to continue replacing containers in 2014, but has had to reduce expenditures to cover flood recovery costs. Mayor Pro Tem Koenig commented, This sponsorship program is allowing us to keep up the momentum. Because of these individuals, new bear-resistant trash/recycling containers have been placed in areas of heavy need including here in Bond Park, in Peacock Park, in the Weist Parking lot and at the Estes Park Visitor Center. For the next round of sponsorships, John and Lynne Geweke and Jerri Paulson of Moosely Ts who will use proceeds from the sales of her Estes Cares About Bears t-shirts.
