The Town of Simsbury will participate in a statewide exercise on Thursday, June 20th designed to ensure preparedness in the event of a severe weather emergency. The exercise is being offered in accordance with Governor Malloy’s Emergency Planning and Preparedness Initiative and will be conducted by the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP). Simsbury participated in a similar drill last year. “Our goal is to maintain the highest possible level of readiness for emergencies of all kinds,” said First Selectman Mary A. Glassman. “We will open our Emergency Operations Center on Thursday morning and respond to the storm scenarios as they develop.” Glassman added that the exercise provided an opportunity for the town’s emergency operations personnel to meet and discuss the status of emergency preparations as the Town enters hurricane season. This year’s exercise is based on a hypothetical severe ice storm in the West/Northwest portion of Connecticut. While the scenario would not seriously impact Simsbury, the town would be positioned to offer support as necessary to townships affected by the storm.
