The Trico Pioneers delivered a gritty effort to earn a 30-27 victory over Waterloo tonight in the championship game of the boys basketball Sparta Mid-Winter Classic. The Pioneers held the Bulldogs to two points in the fourth quarter, en route to the victory. The rest of Saturdays slate featured three other hard-fought games. Murphysboro outlasted Red Bud, 40-34, to claim third place. Sparta hung on to defeat Du Quoin, 62-57, in the fifth-place game.
