The Truth About Opinions - She Seeks an inspirational entry about recognizing just Whose opinion really counts I remember exactly where I sat—second row to the right in my beloved seventh grade English class. I had just turned in a paper titled Gods Not Finished With Me Yet, with my twelve-year-old confidence soaring for this fine editorial of my life thus far. As I sat back down at my plastic, doodle-filled desk, a pimply-faced twelve-year-old boy hurled a blonde joke my way. The entire class exploded in laughter, including the cool girls who recently excluded me from their slumber party. Many years later that memory still stings my heart. Then, as a tender hearted seventh grader, such mean comments would have rocked my world. But, now after God has worked on my tender heart, I can walk away from a similar situation, knowing that my worth is wrapped up in the truth that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (See Psalm 139 My esteem is built up in the knowledge that The Almighty God delights in me. (See Zephaniah 3:17 My entire self perception doesnt revolve around mean jokes or sly comments. I wish I had known then, what God has since helped me learn: the only opinion that truly matters is Gods opinion of you. Do you believe this? Are you at a place in life where you can rest in this statement and keep yourself from striving to manipulate the opinions of others? After countless situations I have personally encountered, where the condition of my heart has revolved around the perception others carried of me, it is something I now believe. When I am tempted to slip back into allowing the opinions of others to override that of God, I return to these truths in Psalm 139 and Zephaniah 3:17 daily—sometimes hourly. What has transpired in the years since my classmates threatened to steal my self worth is many hours of allowing the Lord to show me in a very personal way why His opinion is the only one that counts. ~ It takes me worshiping Him alone and not the people in my life. ~ It takes me sitting down with Him daily and soaking in the Word—allowing the Lords love to permeate every ounce of my heart—over-ruling the values of the culture around me which say Im not pretty enough, skinny enough or smart enough. ~ It takes a single minded focus that whenever sarcastic cut-downs are hurled my way or the opinion of others threatens my self worth, I turn right back to Jesus and remember that... The very Creator of the Universe who adds His beautiful sparkle to the stars looks down at me—AND YOU—and smiles saying... You are are perfect just as I made you. I would love to know what Bible verses you personally turn to when the opinions of other creep in and take over in your mind and heart, as well as what struggles you have in remembering that Gods opinion is the only one that matters. Leave me a comment and lets get a good conversation going this week filled with encouragement for each other. Resources... The LORD your God is in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. {Zephaniah 3:17 NKJV} How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You. {Psalm 139:17-18 NKJV}
