The Two Main Types of Elections in Nigeria.... (Lecture 2, POS 312) Nigerian Electoral System is divided into two main parts.. Namely: 1. Trade-by-Barter System:- This is a system by which votes are exchanged directly for money. E.g, A chairman aspirant visits a political godfather for a help.. The godfather says just giv me a sum of #1,000,000, i wil mobilise people for you, we shall rig the election, steal ballot boxes, give fake manifesto and fake promises, etc The aspirant pays and wins the chairmanship election. (trade by barter) 2. Nothing-goes-for-Nothing System:- In this type of election, no direct negotiation is involved. E.g. A chairman aspirant visits a political godfather for a help.. The godfather says kobo!, i will not collect from you, i will talk to my people and they will vote for you bcos whatever I say is the final Truly, the godfather makes sure he wins the election... But after a while, the godfather sends 16people with application letters to the Chairmans office..godfather tells them go to him, he will give you job The following week, 9people from the godfather..he says again go to him, he will giv u contracts The following week, the godfather phones the Chairman... He says...Hello, my chairman, ba mi send 1.2million naira sinu account mi. (nothing goes for nothing) Lecture by Prof. Afolabi Peter (Senior Lecturer, Aso Rock University, Abuja). Assignment: 1.
