Whitehead has said that the history of western philosophy is no more than a series of footnotes of Plato. It is doubtful whether western thought can maintain itself any longer in this "splendid isolation". The modern epoch is too sharply distinguished from its predecessors to allow of that, being characterised by a confrontation with the "unknown", the "outsiders" and their unaccustomed and unfamiliar, exotic or archaic worlds. For the discoveries of depth psychology and the emergence into History of Non-European ethnic groups truly amount to the invasion by "outsiders" of the once closed FIELD of the western consciousness.
