The U.P. Diliman Lagoon is one of the few public green spaces in Metro Manila. Its not just a haven for wildlife (yes, there are wild animals there although they may be difficult to see), it plays an important ecological function as a catchment area for rain water, thus preventing flooding. The place, its plants and animals, are there for everyone to enjoy responsibly, not for a few ignorant persons to catch, collect, harm or kill. Lu-Ann and I have told U.P. tonight that we will cooperate in their probe of the bittern killing. But more than an investigation, U.P. should clarify what is or is not allowed in the lagoon, and what measures they are taking to safeguard the flora and fauna there and the rest of the campus.
