The U.S poverty thresholds should be reflected for the current - TopicsExpress

The U.S poverty thresholds should be reflected for the current proportion of after-tax income that a modern family spends on food, not the 1/3 proportion used based on a 1955 finding. For instance, many people and families (that I know of) spend around 1/5 of after-tax income on food because our modern expenditures reflect different categories that were not existent in 1955 (i.e. Cell phone, cable, etc.). So what I am saying here for anybody reading not knowing what I am talking about, the poverty line, in my opinion, should be reflected higher than what it is today because the system we use to calculate the line is antiquated. Just yet another problem that our federal government finds difficulty in addressing.
