The UCLA International Institute along with the Division of Humanities and the U.S. Department of Defense will host a reception to mark the launch of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Language Service Corps (NLSC). The Chancellor will give opening remarks and NLSC director, Bill Castan, will make a short presentation. The reception will be on Oct 4th, at the Faculty Center Sierra Room from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. The NLSC is a group of U.S. citizen volunteers who provide language resources to U.S. federal agencies in the case of national need, a regional emergency, or a national security requirement. NSLC members can be called on to use their language skills to assist others in the United States and around the world on short-term assignments. NLSC members have served in Vietnam helping to repatriate the remains of American soldiers and they were in New Orleans after Katrina to help immigrants file claims. Our hope is to get the UCLA community involved and interested in joining NLSC.
