The UK has the fastest growing population in Europe, and is forecast to increase by 6 million in the next 15 years - the equivalent of 12 more cities the size of Manchester. Writing in the Guardian, Chris Huhne is calling for houses to be built on both brownfield and greenfield sites, in response to the growing housing crisis in the UK. No mention of trying to tackle the root cause of this housing demand: population growth. What about the land needed to grow crops (Huhne advocates building on farmland)? What about space for wildlife? What about our dwindling biodiversity? The increased capacity which will be needed to supply an ever-growing population with water, sanitation, energy, healthcare, education and transport? So many questions. Housing demand is just the tip of the iceberg.
