The UK supermarkets continue to show Amazon how its done. Great - TopicsExpress

The UK supermarkets continue to show Amazon how its done. Great email shots with great deals the attached if from Sainsbury today, but its a similar story at Tesco Blinkbox. For anyone still repeating the Amazon cheerleader chorus about how trad pub dont now how to compete and how the Big 5 are all going to fade away, you only need to look at stores like Sainsbury and Blinkbox, with an incredible range of crazy-cheap prices and a ton of FREE ebooks, to see the reality. Heres the thing: there isnt a single indie title among them, because these stores are TOTALLY off-limits to indies. And yes, both these stores are doing rather well. A pertinent reminder that not only are we indies not indispensable, we arent even particularly needed. Along with W H Smith thats now three major UK ebook retailers with not an indie title between them. Its highly improbable the existing big players will shut out indies (but dont rule it out - W H Smith did exactly that), but as Trad Pub fights back (both Sainsbury and Tesco deal directly with the publishers and make sure they get great deals to compete against Amazon) dont expect things to get any easier, in the UK or elsewhere.
