The UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities monitoring group are seeking are a Researcher, Site Coordinators and Monitors for research/ interviews with people with disabilities during March and April 2014 Convention Coalition Monitoring Report Advert: What are disabled New Zealanders saying about their lives? Are you passionate about human rights? Do you want to help to improve the lives of disabled New Zealanders? Do you have a lived experience of disability? If your answers are yes, then please read on. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (the Convention) was adopted by New Zealand on 26 September 2008. A big part of the Convention is the monitoring of its implementation, that is, how well does New Zealand society make rights real for disabled people. The New Zealand Government is paying the New Zealand Convention Coalition Monitoring Group (the Convention Coalition) to interview disabled people about their daily lives and report their experiences back to Government. In its first three years of work the Convention Coalition put out four reports, following the framework set up by Disability Rights Promotion International. The Convention Coalition now has a three year contract to continue its monitoring work. Our fifth report produced in December 2013 tells The story so far which is a summary of the previous four reports. Over the next two and a half years we will be interviewing 600 disabled people. Each interview will be recorded using a digital recorder. The sound files will be given to transcribers who will write down what is said. We will write a summary of what the disabled people told us in the interviews. All the names of the people interviewed will be kept strictly confidential. We will give Government five more reports by 30 June 2016. Our reports will help disabled peoples organisations and Government to prioritise the actions that are needed so that disabled people can take part fully in, and contribute to, New Zealand society. We have hired a Projects Leader. We are now hiring a Researcher, Site Coordinators and Monitors so that interviews and monitoring can continue across New Zealand. The Researcher needs to have proven experience in social research and relevant tertiary qualifications in the social sciences. The Researcher will work with the Projects Leader to make sure we keep to the framework set up by Disability Rights Promotion International and help write the reports. The Monitors will carry out the interviews. The Site Coordinators will help the Monitors plan and organise the interviews and will also act as backup Monitors. The Projects Leader, Researcher, Site Coordinators and Monitors will need to attend the first of three training workshops. This first workshop will be held at the Brentwood Hotel in Wellington from Monday 17 to Wednesday 19 February 2014. All travel arrangements will be made and all costs of the training will be paid for by the Convention Coalition. Each attendee will be paid to attend the three days of training. Following training, the Projects Leader, Researcher, Site Coordinators and Monitors will select 200 disabled people to interview. Then Monitors, working in pairs, will carry out the interviews, in the first instance during March and April 2014. Interview costs for all participants will be paid for by the Convention Coalition. If you are interested in doing research or interviews, you can attend the training in Wellington from Monday 17 to Wednesday 19 February and then help with arranging and carrying out interviews in March and April, please contact me, Mary Schnackenberg. If you have worked with us before in 2010, 2012 or 2013, we would be pleased to hear from you again. But we need you to come to all three days of the training in February and be available in March and April to help with the work. When you contact me, please tell me how you think you can help us with our work.
