The UN Food and Agricultural Organization, F.A.O, says over 800 million people, or 12 percent of the global population, are unable to meet their daily dietary energy requirements. F.A.O Representative to Namibia Babagana Ahmadu says most of the worlds undernourished people are still to be found in Southern Asia, closely followed by Sub-Saharan Africa and Eastern Asia. Ahmadu asserts that although Sub-Saharan Africa has made modest progress in recent years, the region still remains the most affected in terms of undernourishment, with one in four Africans estimated to be hungry. He, therefore, emphasizes the need for policies, specifically targeting the poor, especially those living in rural areas, aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and increasing food availability and access. The UN official believes that policy reforms and economic growth could support a shift and a more market driven agricultural sector. He further observes that FAO in its new Strategic Framework has a comprehensive approach to food and nutrition security. The F.A.O Country Representative made the remarks at the official opening of a three-day food security workshop that started in Windhoek yesterday involving the City of Windhoek and all of Namibias local authorities, the World Future Council, the F.A.O and the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte.
