The US Army has many provisions in place to keep soldiers safe during summer training and exercises, but they will always strive to be better. In 2012 there were approximately 1,600 heat casualties that required medical attention or had lost duty time. Some of the best ways to help avoid these heat injuries is acclimatization (which requires up to 14 days training), access to water, and also a shaded area that is preferably climate controlled, or cooled by fans. Separated into categories, the relative heat and humidity is measured daily, and there are guidelines in place for how many working and resting minutes a soldier should have per hour, depending on the level of exertion, and also recommended water intake for the activities being performed. This is life saving guide for soldiers. Recovery after a heat related illness varies depending on the severity of the injury. Heat exhaustion can take up to 48 to be fully recovered, but the more severe heat stroke, which can be deadly, could require a soldier be on restricted duty for up to 3 months with assessment by a physician. According to the Farmers Almanac, this summer will be high in temperature and humidity, so keep heat safety in the front of your mind, and stay protected from illness and injury.
