The Ukrainian Crisis: A Sign of the End of American Unipolarity? In a few words, Moscow’s foreign policy, which resorts to install a satellite state, is given a free hand by Washington. In this crisis, moreover, the Chinese supports the Russians. This is a puzzle: China does not normally condone the interference in domestic affairs of other countries. But Xi Jinping decides to violate the Chinese foreign policy precept to approve Russia’s adventurism. In other words, Beijing and Moscow start to initiate a muscle-flexing coalition against the American unipole. The power vacuum within two decades after the Cold War has empowered Russia and China in strengthening their saber- rattling capabilities. Russia, for instance, begins to reclaim its former great power status whereas China develops its economy massively to finance the military outgrowth. According to Global Firepower 2014, the Russian military capabilities are ranked second after the U.S. while China’s capabilities are ranked the third in the world. The Russians and the Chinese are at the Americans’ doorstep. The loose counterbalancing coalition between Russia and China is beyond the control of the U.S. Twenty years is sufficient for major powers to assert their will to the former status. Failing to deter the Russian aggression does not only mean that the U.S. grants Russia further territory expansion, it also symbolizes the global downturn of the U.S. as well.
